Visit the Colorado Fishing Atlas to find fishing sites all over Moffat County, on the rivers, lakes and the resevoirs. Get information on driving directions, access and amenities such as camping and motorized or non-motirized boating. This is a good resource for planning a day trip of swimming and picnicking as well.
Plan a trip to Elkhead Resevoir for all kinds of family friendly fun. This 900 acre reservoir has it all - boating, swimming, jet skiing, skiing, picnicking, wildlife, hiking, camping, biking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing.
Freeman Resevoir, located in Black Mountain just north of Craig, is a great escape from the summer heat. The resevoir has hiking, biking, camping, fishing and non motorized boating surrounded by breathtaking views of Routt National Forest.
Anyplace America lists all the resevoirs in Moffat County for those who prefer to explore off the beaten path and make their own way in the backcountry.
The Yampa River runs from Steamboat Springs to Dinosaur National Monument and can be enjoyed by all types of water enthusiasts, most of it without a permit. Check out the River Access Map to plan your float or river run. Vendors are listed in the blog for river rentals, shuttles and guides.
Cross Mountain Gorge is for Expert Boaters only and by order of the Moffat County Sheriff, is only open to Kayakers at flows above 5000cfs. Cross Mountain is only 4 miles long, but it drops about 275 feet while in the gorge. Hike the canyon on multiple routes for views that take your breath away. Surrounded by BLM land, you can camp almost anywhere.
Dinosaur National Monument offers guided commercial raft trips as well as permits for those who have the experience and the gear to go it alone..
Rent boats, Sea Doo's, jet ski's and water toys for use on Elkhead Resevoir from Invert Sports.
They have a great selection of boats and toys but you need to reserve in advance and they deliver!
Craig has an outdoor Swim Complex and Wave Pool. Wave, lap and diving pools, water aerobics, a water slide, a bathhouse, a snack bar and lots of shady and grassy areas for picnics make this a favorite place to cool off in the area each summer.
